Circulating coins
Investment silver today is mainly associated with bullion coins, or investment bars, which are popular around the world. What many people don't realize is that just a decade or so ago, coins with a high silver content were a commonly used means of payment and were in normal commercial circulation. Historical circulation coins can therefore be an excellent alternative when it comes to investing in silver - their availability on the market is sizable, and prices can often be very attractive.
What are circulating coins?
Circulation coins are physical money that are or have been used in everyday commercial transactions. Being legal tender, accepted by the public, they function in a country's economy. Circulation coins can have different denominations, or values, and are minted by a country's central bank or state mint. Circulation coins differ from collector or investment coins because their main purpose is to facilitate payments and everyday transactions. They usually have standard designs and are produced in large quantities to meet the needs of trade and money circulation in the economy.
Junk silver - "junk silver"
"Junk silver" is a term used to refer to old, used silver coins that contain a certain amount of pure silver. These are not collectible or numismatic coins, but rather circulating coins whose main value comes from their silver content. "Junk silver" coins used to be used as a means of payment, but over time they have lost their nominal value and are treated mainly as raw silver. Investors often buy "junk silver" coins because of their silver content as a form of investment in the precious metal.
Since junk silver coins have a value based on their silver content, their value can fluctuate with silver prices in the commodity market. Investors can purchase junk silver coins as a form of hedging against inflation or as a way to diversify their investment portfolio.
