Swiss Silver Coin, 2 Francs, 1874–1967, 10 g
Asilvercirculation coin weighing 10 grams and with a silver fineness of 0.835.
A silver coin dating from the era of the Swiss Confederation.
The 2 Swiss franc silver coin is one of the key elements in the history of Swiss numismatics. It was first issued in 1850, when the newly formed Swiss Confederation began producing a nationwide series of coins. Prior to this period, each of Switzerland’s 26 cantons issued its own currency, which significantly hindered trade and everyday transactions between regions. As a result of monetary reforms, a unified currency system was introduced, and the Swiss franc became the new currency. The first series included denominations ranging from 1 centime to 5 francs, with the 2-franc coin struck from 0.900-fine silver. Various mints, including the Bern Mint, were responsible for producing the coins, and their issuance continued for many decades. In 1875, the silver fineness of the 2-franc coins was changed to 0.835, which allowed for a reduction in production costs while maintaining the high quality of the metal.
The obverse of the coin features Helvetia, the symbol of Switzerland. A woman in classical attire holds a spear in one hand and a shield bearing the Swiss cross in the other, symbolizing the strength, unity, and independence of the nation. Below the figure is the inscription “HELVETIA,” the traditional Latin name for the country. The obverse of the coin is distinguished by its precisely crafted details—a realistic depiction of the folds in her robes, her facial features, and the elements of the shield—while the serrated edge protects the coin from counterfeiting and excessive wear. The reverse of the coin highlights its face value. The central part features the clear inscription “2 FR,” with the date of issue below. The entire design is surrounded by a decorative wreath, most often in the form of oak or laurel branches, which emphasizes the traditional character of Swiss currency. The serrated edge of the reverse maintains stylistic consistency with the obverse, creating a harmonious composition.
