The Swiss 1 franc silver coin, issued since the mid-19th century, is an important part of Switzerland's numismatic history. Its production began in 1850, when the first nationwide series of coins was created as part of the newly formed Swiss Confederation. Prior to 1850, each of Switzerland's 26 cantons issued its own coins, which hindered trade and communication between regions. As a result of currency reforms aimed at unifying the monetary system, a common currency, the Swiss franc, was introduced. The first series of coins included denominations from 1 centime to 5 francs. At the time, the 1 franc coin was minted in sterling silver. These coins were issued by various mints, including the Bern Mint, and their production continued for many decades. In 1875, the silver alloy of 1-franc coins was changed to 0.835 to reduce production costs.

The figure of Helvetia, the personification of Switzerland, takes center stage on the obverse. The woman stands in classical dress, holding a spear in one hand and a shield with a Swiss cross in the other, symbolizing the country's strength, independence and unity. Below the figure is the inscription "HELVETIA," which is the traditional Latin term for the country. The obverse was made with great attention to detail - the folds of the robes, facial features and elements of the shield were realistically reproduced, and the coin's edge is serrated to protect it from forgery and excessive wear. The reverse of the coin, on the other hand, focuses on its monetary function. In the central part, the face value is clearly marked, and below it, the coin's date of issue. The whole is surrounded by an ornamental wreath, often in the form of oak or laurel branches, which adds elegance to the composition and emphasizes the traditional character of the currency. The edge of the reverse is also serrated, maintaining stylistic consistency with the obverse.
