Silver 5 franc coins issued in France and Belgium between 1832 and 1878 were an important part of monetary circulation in the 19th century. Made of sterling silver, they weighed 25 grams and were 37 mm in diameter, making them sturdy and durable circulation coins. In France, they usually depicted the image of Louis-Philippe, Napoleon III or the symbolic Marianne, while in Belgium they featured King Leopold I or Leopold II. Both versions followed the so-called Latin monetary union system, which facilitated trade between countries. These coins had a high utilitarian as well as symbolic value - they were a symbol of financial stability and the modern state. Today they are valuable collector's items, especially copies in good state of preservation. Their history shows the drive to unify monetary systems in Europe even before the euro was created.
