In Korea, the Phoenix is known as Bong-Hwang and is considered an inspirational national symbol. The Phoenix was originally mentioned in various texts of Greek culture and mythology. In particular, the writings of Hesiod and Herodotus. According to various accounts, the phoenix has special regenerative abilities. Upon reaching adulthood, the creature burns in flames, only to be reborn again from the ashes. Today, the phoenix still remains a popular symbol of renewal and resurrection.

The obverse of the South Korean silver medal depicts a phoenix in flight. In this new design, the phoenix is facing right and the scene shows the moment of landing. This image gives us a wonderful picture of the bird's majestic wings and dazzling tail feathers. The obverse also contains a hidden security feature, the image of which changes when the medal is tilted at different angles. The reverse of the medal shows us a version of the presidential seal. This image depicts a pair of phoenixes surrounding a Yin and Yang symbol.
