The coin is another release from the hugely popular Lunar II series, a follow-up to the well-received Lunar I collection. The series is based on the Chinese lunar calendar, in which a zodiac animal is assigned for each year. Chinese beliefs hold that those born in the year represented by a particular animal gain distinctive characteristics that affect their lives. The year 2012 belongs to the year of the dragon, and those born under its sign are distinguished by a strong personality, determination to achieve goals, creativity and good intuition.
The reverse of the silver coin shows us an image of a Chinese dragon trying to capture a pearl, a symbol inherent in China. In the right part we see the sign signifying the dragon, while at the bottom we see the English name of the lunar year. The obverse shows us an image of Queen Elizabeth II along with the year of issue and the denomination of one Australian dollar.
