Silver Stacker Aztec Sun Stone, 2 oz.
A silver numismatic coin inspired by the Aztec sunstone.
The Korean mint KOMSCO is responsible for the production of this silver medal.
The design of the numismat is based directly on the original stone disk built by the Aztecs. The original survived to our time incomplete, so the designers made minor adjustments to fully reconstruct its original appearance. The original measured 358 centimeters in diameter, 98 thick and weighed 24 tons. Several hypotheses have been advanced about the disc's purpose, the most likely being two. One is that the stone served as a calendar, while the other suggests ceremonial use, as according to it, the Aztec myth of the Five Suns was depicted on the disk.
The obverse and reverse are identical, the only difference being that the obverse is convex and the reverse is concave. This allows one numismat to be placed on top of the other. In the center of the image sits Tonatiuh, the Aztec sun god. Surrounding the deity are four blocks that indicate previous suns, or eras of Aztec cosmology. When the original stone was carved, the Aztecs thought they were living in the fifth and final era.
