Congo Liopleurodon 2022 Silver Coin, 1 oz.
Prehistoric Life is an acclaimed series from Leipziger MV.
Another coin from the series in a limited edition of 10,000 pieces!
The next coin in the series presents Liopleurodon, which appeared 166-163 million years ago in the Middle Jurassic. It was then the largest aquatic predator and remained so until the mid-Cretaceous. Liopleurodon was not a reptile, but a zauropsid, growing up to about 10 meters in length, hunting basically anything that could not escape it. The most striking feature, relative to the more familiar plesiosaurs, is a much shorter neck, making it more like a crocodile in shape.
On the reverse of the silver coin, a hunting Liopleurodon is shown trying to snatch the small cephalopod. The whole scene is watched from afar by an ichthyosaur. A small piece of bottom vegetation can be seen at the bottom. At the very top is the name of the series , below it is the name of the predator, along with the estimated period of its appearance on earth. Below, on the edge of the coin, the names of the periods are written in order, along with the years they covered. The obverse bears the coat of arms of the Republic of Congo along with the denomination - 20 Congolese francs.
