Cutty Sark is the sailing ship that is the subject of the latest installment of the Nautical Ounce series.
The series is themed after the most famous ships in history.
The Cutty Sark, one of the most famous tea clippers in history, is a British sailing ship that became famous for its speed and elegance. Built in 1869 in Dumbarton, Scotland, the Cutty Sark was designed by Hercules Linton and built by the Scott & Linton shipyard. The ship was commissioned by John Willis, a well-known shipowner who wanted to create the fastest clipper ship in the world. The Cutty Sark was built to carry tea from China to Britain, and its sleek silhouette and modern design were intended to provide a competitive edge.
On the reverse of the silver investment coin we see the clipper, the Cutty Sark. It is a long and slender sailing ship equipped with 3 masts with very large rigging, typical for such vessels. Around the ship we can find the name of the series, the year of issue, as well as the weight and silver sample. At the very bottom we can read the name of the ship. The obverse bears the national coat of arms of the state of Rwanda, for which the coin is the official tender of 50 Rwandan francs.
