"Slavic Beasts" Silver Coin - Utopiec 2026 BU, 1 ounce

The Utopiec is one of the most recognizable creatures in Slavic folklore, with particularly deep roots in Silesian tradition. According to ancient beliefs, it was a water demon inhabiting lakes, ponds, rivers, and wetlands. It was believed to be formed from the souls of people who had drowned and had not found peace after death. He was most often depicted as a terrifying figure with damp, greenish skin, tangled hair overgrown with seaweed, and a haggard appearance. The Utopiec was considered a dangerous and treacherous creature—it lured people and animals into the water, from which there was no return. In some regional accounts, however, it was assigned the role of guardian of bodies of water, watching over their natural order.

The obverse of the coin features the coat of arms of the Republic of Cameroon along with the denomination “2000 FRANCS CFA,” while above the coat of arms is a small shield bearing the year of issue. The background is filled with a rich decorative composition consisting of intricately designed plant and animal motifs, evoking the atmosphere of a mysterious world hidden beneath the water’s surface. Amid the dense vegetation, one can make out a scaly tail reminiscent of an ancient aquatic creature, while numerous leaves, flowers, and winding shoots emphasize the wild nature of the depicted scene. The engraver’s meticulous craftsmanship and the richness of detail lend the obverse exceptional artistic and collectible value.

The reverse depicts Utopiec emerging from the dark marshes. His slender, gaunt figure, unnaturally elongated hands, and fish-like tail create the image of a creature that inspires both unease and respect. The figure is surrounded by marsh vegetation and the remains of a wooden structure, and the composition is enriched by numerous small elements, such as a water lily, a dragonfly, a frog, an old wagon wheel, and tall reeds. At the bottom of the reverse side are the inscriptions “UTOPIEC” and “SLAVIC BESTIARY,” which emphasize that the coin belongs to a series dedicated to Slavic legends.
