The featured coin was produced as the official legal tender of the British Indian Ocean Territory by the Pobjoy Mint. It was dedicated to a 19th-century sailing ship, christened "Cutty Sark." The ship was built in 1869 and was primarily used to transport tea to Europe from distant China. The Cutty Sark made many voyages, during which it exhibited incredible speed. It is considered by many industry experts to be the fastest sailing ship of its time. The ship is now in London and serves as a historical museum.

In the rim, near the top edge of the coin was the inscription "The Cutty Sark," and below it the weight of the coin and the silver sample. The obverse features the figure of Queen Elizabeth II. The coin is the official legal tender of BIOT and carries a face value of 1 ROYAL.
