Sitting Bull was the Great Indian Chief of the Spirit of the Wild West.

Sitting Bull, also known as Tatanka lyotake, was one of the most prominent Indian chiefs who left a lasting mark on the history of the Wild West. Born in about 1831 among the Hunkpapa Sioux, Sitting Bull became one of the key leaders of the Lakota tribe. His Indian name, "Tatanka lyotake," means "Sitting Bull." He earned this name as a result of his youthful exploits when he fought buffalo as a young warrior, which was considered a unique achievement in Indian culture. He gained his fame during the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876, where he and other chiefs defied the forces of the Ameycan army. The battle was one of the most important successes of the Indian tribes.

The reverse of the copper coin shows the image of Sitting Bull, who has a huge plume on his head, characteristic of Indian chiefs. The obverse of the medal presents an Indian tipi with the moon depicted slightly behind it under the inscription "AMERICAN INDIAN SERIES."
