The Battle of Iwo Jima fought between the United States and Japan was one of the key events during World War II. Iwo Jima was part of the archipelago of the Japanese Islands and a strategically important location for the US Army Air Force. Due to the strong fortification of the defensive positions and thanks to the exceptional determination of both sides, the battle went down in history as one of the bloodiest and fiercest of World War II. American forces suffered heavy losses, but eventually captured the island, allowing it to be converted into an air base for B-29 bombers.

The reverse of the copper disc shows the iconic scene of the raising of the American flag by US Army soldiers on the island of Iwo Jima during the battle. The upper part bears the inscription "U.S MARINES" while the date of the historic photograph, February 23, 1945, is placed below the scene. The obverse of the coin shows an American eagle holding olive branches in its talons along with arrows.
