Mayan Calendar, Samoa 2022, 1 oz Silver Coin
A silver coin inspired by the calendar used in the Mayan civilization.
Mayan Calendar is distinguished by a low issue run limited to 8,000 copies
The Mayan calendar is based on the coupling of two cycles: a ritual cycle of 260 days and a solar cycle of 365 days. The coin's theme focuses on the first cycle known as "Tzolkin." The 260-day ritual cycle was emblematic of Mesoamerican peoples, distinguished by the fact that it was not found in the calendars of other regions. It is estimated that it was invented early in the first millennium BC by the Zapotecs or Olmecs. The Tzolkin was 260 days long and was marked by a combination of numbers from 1 to 13 and the names of the 20 days of the 20-day sequence.
The reverse of the bullion coin is decorated with the image of a representative of Mesoamerican peoples carrying a large stone on his back. A hieroglyphic mark symbolizing the name of the day is engraved on the stone. Around the kneeling figure are arranged all the hieroglyphs representing the 20 names of the 20-day sequence. The obverse of the coin presents the national emblem of the country of Samoa, for which the coin is the official means of payment.
