The Year of the Buffalo is the second issue of the Lunar series from the Royal Australian Mint.

The Chinese lunar year is a common motif used in coinage. It has been used by many mints around the world - today we present one of the more recognized lunar collections - from under the Royal Australian Mint. The presented silver investment coin is the second in the Lunar series and represents the upcoming buffalo year after the rat year.

According to Chinese beliefs, the buffalo was to be the second animal to answer the call of the great Buddha. The reverse of the coin depicts an adult buffalo seeking shelter among the branches of a willow tree. On the right side was the Chinese designation of the year of the buffalo, along with the coin's weight and silver proof. On the obverse we find the image of Queen Elizabeth II located in the center of the circle formed by all 12 animals of the Chinese lunar calendar. The presented silver bullion coin is the official money of Australia - it has a denomination of 1 AUD.
