The Somali Elephant is part of the "African Wildlife" collection, inspired by wild animals found in Africa.

African Wildlife, is a unique collection of coins dedicated to the wildlife of the African continent. As of 2004, the values in this series are the official bullion coins of the Republic of Somalia. An interesting feature, giving this series a collector's character, are the images of animals that change every year. The "African Wildlife" collection is produced by the German mint Bavarian State Mint in consultation with Somali authorities.

The obverse of the coin depicts Somalia's coat of arms - two leopards supporting a shield with a star in the center. It also features the coin's denomination - 100 Somali shillings (SOS), the minting year and the inscription "Somali Republic." The reverse of the coin depicts the silhouette of an adult elephant. The image is filled with the animal's head, located in the foreground. In the background we see the landscape of the African savannah. Above, the inscription describing the collection - "African Wildlife" and below it the weight and proof of the coin.
