The coin refers to the fauna of Komodo, one of Indonesia's islands. It depicts one of the region's most distinctive animals, the Komodo varanus. It is the largest living contemporary species of lizard, which can reach a length of more than 3 meters and a weight in the neighborhood of 150 kilograms. Komodo varans are predators and hunt a variety of animals, including reptiles, birds and mammals. It can also pose a threat to humans. Poaching and habitat loss have contributed to the animal becoming endangered.

The top of the coin features the name of the animal. The obverse features a classic portrait of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain, along with the date of issue and the coin's denomination. At the very bottom is the coat of arms of Tokelau, in whose territory the coin is legal tender. The coin was oxidized on both sides, which not only protected the silver, but also increased the legibility of the coin's relief details.
