The silver coin with the image of the tragically deceased President John F. Kennedy is the penultimate 1/2 dollar circulation coin made of silver. In 1969, another issue of this coin debuted, but with a reduced weight to 11.5 grams and a purity of 0.800. This coin was created under sad circumstances, as the idea behind its creation was the desire to commemorate the death of the 35th President of the United States.

The reverse of the silver coin presents the left profile of the US president. Around, above his head is placed the inscription LIBERTY, characteristic of American coins, . At the bottom is the maxim "In god we trust", while at the very bottom is the date of issue. The obverse, in turn, depicts an eagle, which is the emblem of the United States, holding in its talons a bunch of arrows and an olive branch. At the very bottom is placed the denomination of 1/2 USD.
