Thor’s battle with Jörmungandr, also known as the Midgard Serpent, is one of the most important and dramatic events in Norse mythology. Jörmungandr was a mighty sea serpent, the son of Loki, who coiled his body around the entire world of men, with his tail reaching into his own mouth. Thor, the god of thunder and lightning, had long considered him one of his greatest enemies and sought to destroy him. According to one legend, while out fishing, the god managed to pull the monster from the depths, but the giant Hymir cut the line, preventing Thor from delivering the final blow. Their fate was to clash again during Ragnarök—the end of the world—when Thor was to slay the serpent with a mighty blow from his hammer, Mjölnir. The victory, however, turned out to be tragic, because after defeating his opponent, Thor took only nine steps before falling dead from Jörmungandr’s venom.

The obverse of the coin depicts Thor, one of the most powerful gods of Norse mythology, associated with thunder, lightning, strength, and protection. The god of storms is depicted in the moment before the clash, as he prepares to fight a formidable opponent. In his hand, he wields Mjölnir—the legendary hammer endowed with magical power, which is his most distinctive attribute and a symbol of invincible strength. The motif refers to Thor’s battle with Jörmungandr, the mighty Serpent of Midgard, whose fate is inextricably linked to the prophecy of Ragnarök. The reverse features symbolic depictions of Mjölnir and Thor, highlighting the Nordic origins of the inspiration and the god’s significance in mythology. The composition is complemented by a double-headed eagle, the distinctive coat of arms of Germania Mint.
