Ragnarök: Jörmungandr 2026 Silver Coin, 1 ounce (Black BU)

The third installment in the series is dedicated to the mythical battle between Thor and the sea serpent Jörmungandr.

Thor’s battle with Jörmungandr, also known as the Serpent of Midgard, holds a special place in Norse mythology and is one of the most significant events related to the prophecy of Ragnarök. Jörmungandr was the offspring of Loki and the giantess Angrboða, and his enormous body encircled the entire world of humans, his tail reaching into his own mouth. Thor, the god of thunder, storms, and warriors, viewed him as a formidable adversary whom he had to face in a battle of ultimate significance. According to Norse tradition, their destiny was a decisive clash during Ragnarök, when Thor was to slay the serpent with his legendary hammer, Mjölnir. Although the god ultimately defeated Jörmungandr, he too met his end, poisoned by his opponent’s venom after taking just nine steps. Their duel has become a symbol of the inevitability of fate and the tragic price that even the most powerful gods must pay for victory.

The obverse of the coin depicts Jörmungandr, the mythical sea serpent whose mighty form, according to Norse beliefs, encircled the entire world. As the son of Loki and the giantess Angrboða, he was one of the beings who played a significant role in the events leading up to Ragnarök. The depiction alludes to his inevitable confrontation with Thor, one of the most powerful gods of the Norse pantheon. Their duel symbolizes a clash of forces whose consequences extend beyond the fates of the opponents themselves and herald a great transformation of the world. The reverse features an image of a serpent devouring its own tail, alluding to its mythical nature and the endless cycle of existence, as well as a two-headed eagle, the distinctive coat of arms of Germania Mint.
