The idea behind the creation of goldbacks was to create an alternative to traditional money. These means of payment, unlike regular money, are based on gold. The 10 Goldback bill on display contains 0.311 grams of pure gold in the form of a metallic layer applied to a polymer film.

Justitia, or Justice, appears for the second time as a Virtue on the Goldback banknote. It is noteworthy that she is not blindfolded, but has a fully exposed face. She is modeled after a statue of Justice that appears on the Storey County Courthouse in Virginia City, Nevada. In the days of the Wild West, Nevada judges wanted those who broke the law to know that Justice could see everything, and depicted her precisely with her eyes wide open.
