The Way to Valhalla: Erik the Red 2024, 2 oz Silver Coin
Erik the Red is the second installment of The Way to Valhalla collection.
The series of silver coins refers to Nordic tales of warrior Vikings.
Erik the Red, also known as Erik Thorvaldsson, was an Icelandic Viking who probably lived in the 11th century. He was a well-known explorer and colonizer. Erik was exiled from Norway to Iceland because of a murder he committed. Later, in 982, he was exiled again, this time to Greenland, where he established the first permanent Viking settlement. His son Leif Erikson is often considered the first European to reach North America. Erik the Red is known for paving the way for later Viking expeditions to Greenland and America. His life and actions had a major impact on the history of Scandinavian exploration and colonization in the North Atlantic.
On the reverse of the silver coin we see the silhouette of Eric Thorvaldsson wielding an axe along with a shield. He leads a fleet of ships, which can be seen behind his back. Noteworthy here is the colorful finish of the Viking's hair and beard. The obverse is the familiar design from the first installment of the series, on which we see a Viking riding a horse. Around it there is information on the weight of the coin, the date of issue and the denomination.
