This series of silver coins draws inspiration from Norse tales of the warlike Vikings.

Harald Hardrada, whose given name was Harald III, was king of Norway from 1046 to 1066 and one of the most famous warriors of medieval Europe. His nickname, Hardrada—which roughly translates to “Stern Ruler” or “Tough Commander”—reflected his uncompromising nature and reputation as an outstanding warrior. In his youth, he took part in battles in Norway, and then served for many years in the Varangian Guard of the Byzantine emperors, gaining vast military experience and wealth. Upon his return to Scandinavia, he ascended the Norwegian throne and embarked on an ambitious policy aimed at consolidating his power and expanding the kingdom’s influence. In 1066, he attempted to seize the English throne, capitalizing on the conflict over the succession following the death of Edward the Confessor. He was initially successful, defeating the English army at Fulford, but a few days later he suffered a defeat at the Battle of Stamford Bridge, where he was killed. His death is often regarded as the symbolic end of the era of the great Viking expeditions, and Harald Hardrada himself remains to this day one of the most legendary figures of the Nordic Middle Ages.

The reverse features a scene alluding to Harald’s refuge at the court of Yaroslav the Wise in Kyiv, where he met Elisiv of Kyiv—a princess whose promise lends this coin a special, emotional dimension. According to the sagas, his advances were initially rejected, so Harald set off to join the Varangian Guard, where he amassed wealth, gained experience, and rose to a high position. Years later, he returned rich and influential, having become a man worthy of the royal crown.

The obverse of the coin is classic for every issue in the series and depicts a Viking galloping on a horse, symbolizing the hero’s dynamism, strength, and indomitable spirit. Inscriptions surrounding the scene indicate the coin’s denomination, weight, and year of issue, lending it an official and prestigious character. The entire composition combines artistic precision with the rich historical heritage of the Viking Age, creating exceptional value for collectors. The coin is not only a tribute to the legendary warrior but also a testament to numismatic mastery.
