Birds of Paradise are exceptionally beautiful creatures found in New Guinea, among other places. They are characterized by very colorful plumage and the presence of extremely ornate feathers, which males use in a mating dance to attract the attention of females. Some species of birds of paradise have extremely black feathers that can absorb up to 99.95% of light, making them considered the darkest material found in nature.

The coin is a modern adaptation of a coinage produced in the late 19th century in Berlin for the German colony of New Guinea. The reverse depicts one of the representatives of the birds of paradise, immortalized as they perform their characteristic mating dance. Beneath its image we can read the inscription BIRD OF PARADISE. In the upper part of the reverse there is information on the coin's weight, silver sample and date of issue. The obverse of the coin is decorated with the emblem of Papua New Guinea depicting a miraculous dwarf sitting on a drum with a traditional spear and harpoon in the background. Below the emblem is the denomination 1 KINA.
