A Prehistoric Colossus Comes to Life on a Silver Coin

Plateosaurus was one of the earliest large herbivorous dinosaurs. It reached lengths of up to 8–10 meters, and its distinctive silhouette, with a long neck and tail, made it one of the most impressive animals of its era. Plateosaurus moved primarily on two legs, though it likely also used its forelimbs when foraging for food. Thanks to its long neck, it was able to reach vegetation located higher up, which gave it an advantage in its prehistoric environment. Its discoveries have played an important role in research on the origins of the evolution of large herbivorous dinosaurs. 

The reverse of the silver coin depicts a majestic scene featuring Plateosaurus in its natural, prehistoric setting. The central part of the composition is occupied by a massive dinosaur with a characteristic, elongated neck, which, with its head raised, roams the terrain in search of food. Other specimens are visible in the background, lending the entire scene a sense of life and allowing one to imagine Plateosaurus in its natural habitat millions of years ago. The obverse of the coin features the national coat of arms of the Republic of the Congo, where the coin is legal tender. The centrally placed national symbol underscores the significance of the issue and its official character, combining the prehistoric theme with numismatic tradition and the issuer’s sovereignty.
