2015 Australian Koala Silver Coin, 1 ounce

The coin draws inspiration from the incredibly complex and fascinating world of Australian wildlife. The star of the series is the koala, a small marsupial that is endemic to Australia. The koala’s appearance is highly recognizable—it has a rounded face with large, fluffy ears and a distinctive black nose. Their bodies are covered in soft, thick fur that is silvery-gray on the back and whitish on the belly. The koala’s most distinctive feature is its diet; leaves are its primary food source. In particular, it prefers eucalyptus leaves, which make up about 90% of its daily diet.

On the reverse of this coin, we see a small koala clinging to a tree trunk. At the very top of the coin is the series name—“Australian Koala”—and below it are the year of issue, the coin’s weight, and the silver fineness. The obverse of the coin features, as is standard for the Perth Mint, an image of Queen Elizabeth II. The coin is legal tender throughout Australia, with a face value of 1 AUD.
