Silver Coin African Ounce: Spotted Hyena 2026, 1 ounce

The currency is the official means of payment within the state of Rwanda.

The spotted hyena is a powerful predatory mammal belonging to the hyena family, found mainly in the savannahs and semi-deserts of sub-Saharan Africa. This species is easily recognized by its sturdy body and distinctive mottled fur. These animals form extended communities called clans, in which the female is dominant - a unique phenomenon among mammals. Although often thought of as scavengers, spotted hyenas are extremely skilled hunters, able to bring down large prey such as antelopes and zebras. They communicate with a number of sounds, the most famous of which is their distinctive "laugh," which serves a communicative function within the group. As part of the African ecosystem, they play a key role in maintaining natural balance and cleaning up the environment.

The reverse of the coin shows an adult hyena accompanied by two cubs, depicted against a map of the African continent. Surrounding the motif are inscriptions including the name of the series, the year of issue, the weight and the silver sample. The obverse features the coat of arms of the Republic of Rwanda, and the coin's denomination - 50 Rwandan francs - is visible below.
