Sitting Bull (Tatanka Iyotake) was one of the most famous chiefs and spiritual leaders of the Lakota (Sioux). He was born around 1831 and distinguished himself from a young age by his courage and leadership talent. He became famous as a strategist and warrior, especially during the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876, where his forces defeated General Custer's army. Sitting Bull opposed white settlement on Native American lands and fought to preserve the traditional way of life of his people. After the surrender, he lived in Canada for a time, and later returned to the US and was detained by the authorities. He died in 1890 at the hands of Indian policemen, during an attempted arrest.
