The Lion King is a 1994 Disney animated film that tells the story of Simba, a young lion and heir to the throne of the Pride Lands. After the tragic death of his father, Mufasa, Simba flees and grows up with his new friends, Timon and Pumbaa. Years later, he discovers the truth about his uncle Scar’s betrayal and decides to return to reclaim his rightful place as king. The film combines beautiful animation, a moving storyline, and unforgettable music, including songs by Elton John. The Lion King has won numerous awards and is considered one of the best animated films of all time.
On the reverse side, we see Simba the lion, one of the film’s main characters. He stands on a rock beneath which all the surrounding animals gathered to admire and listen to their ruler. This coin is legal tender in Niue with a face value of 2 NZD. Its obverse therefore features an image of Queen Elizabeth II and the year of issue.
