The coin is produced by the South African Mint. It is the official currency of South Africa, and the bullion content is guaranteed by the country's government. The coin is named after Paul Kruger - one of South Africa's nationalist heroes, later president of the republic from 1883 to 1900. The coin's history dates back 50 years, but the first silver Krugerrand was only minted in 2017.

The coin's reverse depicts an image of the Springbok antelope, which is found in areas of southwestern Africa. It also features the year of issue of the coin and the coin's weight designation - 1oz. The obverse of the coin is decorated with the left profile of the aforementioned Paul Kruger. Surrounding the figure is the inscription "South Africa" - minted in English and Afrikaans.
