Alderney: D-Day 80th Anniversary 2024, 1 oz Silver Coin

Alderney, the northernmost of the Channel Islands, played a key role during the war due to its strategic location in the English Channel, near Normandy, France. In June 1940, the island's entire civilian population of about 1,500 people was evacuated to Britain ahead of the German occupation. The Germans fortified Alderney as part of the Atlantic Wall, building bunkers and labor camps. These defenses were designed to repel any Allied invasion attempt, underscoring the strategic importance of the island.

The reverse of the silver investment coin shows Allied soldiers during the June 6, 1944 landing in Normandy. This was the largest landing operation in human history. The upper part features inscriptions informing about the anniversary of the event on the occasion of which the coin was issued. The obverse of the silver coin depicts the right profile of the current ruler of the Kingdom of Great Britain, King Charles III, along with the year of issue and the denomination of £1.
