For centuries, the Utopiec has held an important place in Slavic folklore and legends, and is particularly closely associated with the folklore of Silesia. It was considered a demon inhabiting rivers, lakes, ponds, and wetlands. According to ancient beliefs, it was formed from the souls of those who had died in the water and had not found eternal rest. He was described as a gaunt, wet figure with greenish skin, long hair entangled with seaweed, and a terrifying appearance. He was said to lure unwary travelers and animals into the depths of the water. However, some accounts also attribute to him the role of guardian of the waters and protector of the natural balance.

The obverse of the coin features the coat of arms of the Republic of Cameroon, accompanied by the denomination “2000 FRANCS CFA.” Above the coat of arms is a small shield bearing the year of issue. The composition is surrounded by an elaborate ornament inspired by the natural world—full of lush vegetation, flowers, and animal motifs. Emerging from a dense labyrinth of leaves is a scaly tail reminiscent of a legendary aquatic creature, lending the whole design a mysterious character. The refined details and precise relief highlight the coin’s high-quality craftsmanship and exceptional aesthetic value. The reverse depicts the figure of a water sprite emerging from a marshy landscape. Its slender silhouette, elongated fingers, and fish-like tail create an evocative image of a creature straight out of ancient folklore. The scene is complemented by elements characteristic of wetlands, including a water lily, a dragonfly, a frog, an old wooden wheel, and tall reeds, which enhance the atmosphere of mystery. At the bottom of the design are the inscriptions “UTOPIEC” and “SLAVIC BESTIARY,” indicating that the coin belongs to a collection inspired by Slavic mythology.
