The theme for the series of silver bullion coins is mythical creatures from the folklore and legends of many cultures that captivate the human imagination. Whether it's a sphinx guarding ancient secrets or a fire-breathing dragon, mythical creatures continue to inspire. The first installment of Mythical Creatures features a giant water snake. Although modern science has not confirmed the existence of such creatures, legends of sea serpents still live on in culture and literature. In Norse mythology, the sea serpent was known as Jormungand, and its body was so large that it surrounded all of Midgard. In the Middle Ages and the modern era, sailors often told stories of their encounters with sea serpents.

The reverse of the bullion coin presents an image of a huge water serpent writhing among the sea waves. What strikes the eye is the creature's huge mouth and spiky back. At the very top one can read the inscription "SEA SERPENT". The obverse of the coin depicts the national coat of arms of the State of Niue surrounded by sea creatures. From the obverse we will learn the date of issue, the bullion sample, weight and denomination of the coin.
