Gods of Olympus: Ares 2023, 1 oz Silver Coin

Ares is the seventh edition of a series devoted to the Greek gods.

Ares was the son of Zeus and Hera, and was considered the god of war, violence and brutality. He was the brother of Hephaestus, Aphrodite and Hebe. He was depicted as a young and strong warrior, wearing armor and holding a spear or sword. He was often accompanied by personifications of violence and destruction, such as Deimos (Fear) and Phobos (Fear). Although Ares was the hero of many myths, his figure was not particularly respected among other gods and humans.

On the reverse of the silver coin we see the figure of Ares dressed in hoplite armor. He holds a shield in his left hand and a spear in his right. He holds his left foot on the helmet of a fallen warrior. In the background we see a battlefield landscape depicting chaotic soldiers fighting. At the bottom of the coin is the name of the figure. The obverse presents us with a profile of Queen Elizabeth the Second, below it are the initials of the designer of the print as well as the years of the monarch's reign. The bottom shows the year of issue, the name of the country for which the coin was issued and the denomination.
