Taekwondo literally means "the way of the fist and foot," and is a Korean martial art that focuses on kicking techniques, fist strikes, blocks and throws. Taekwondo develops in a variety of styles and variations, but most have common elements. Kicking techniques are a key element of this martial art. They focus on using leg strength to attack an opponent from different directions and from different heights. Developing mental and moral discipline is also important in taekwondo. Taekwondo practitioners are taught principles such as respect, honesty, self-control and the pursuit of excellence. They are also taught that taekwondo should only be used in self-defense situations and that the use of force outside of training should be avoided.
