Silver Year of the Monkey is the ninth installment of the Lunar II series .
A popular series inspired by the lunar calendar issued by Perth Mint.
Lunar II is a series of silver coins launched in 2008. It is a continuation of the hugely popular Lunar series, which ended a year earlier. The coins are issued in 12-year cycles, just as the years of the Chinese lunar calendar follow one another in cycles. Each year is assigned a different animal, and the coin's next year of issue features the likeness of the animal representing that year on the reverse.
The reverse of the 2016 Year of the Monkey shows two monkeys, a parent and a child, sitting on a tree branch. A Chinese symbol denoting the monkey is placed at the top, while the name of the currency is placed at the bottom. According to Chinese beliefs, people born in the year of the monkey are extremely popular and sociable people, very fond of having fun. The obverse, traditional for the series, presents the right profile of Queen Elizabeth II, along with information about the denomination, silver sample and weight.
