The design of the 1/2 Florida Goldback Gold Note commemorates the first European expeditions to the Florida peninsula. The image shows a young woman wearing the traditional armor of a Spanish conquistador, dismounting from her horse and putting down her helmet, holding water from the supposed Fountain of Youth. When Juan Ponce de León first reached the east coast of Florida in 1513, he was searching for the legendary Fountain of Youth, although this expedition was likely secondary to his main mission of expanding Spanish territory and finding new resources. Landing during the Easter season, or "Pascua Florida" in Spanish, he named the peninsula "La Florida" in honor of this holiday and the abundance of flowering plants in the region. Although he claimed the land on behalf of Spain, his first exploration was relatively brief, and on his return a few years later he was mortally wounded in a conflict with the indigenous population.
