The Idaho 1 Goldback depicts the virtue of Fides, or faith and trust, through the experiences of pioneer families traveling the California Trail. The scene shows a mother leading her child across an open space. In the background rise the granite peaks of City of Rocks, which served as a landmark for emigrants traveling the California Trail. Behind the mother and child, a covered wagon is pulled along the trail, carrying a group of travelers. They are surrounded by native wildlife: a lizard living among sagebrush, a pronghorn antelope, and a Virginia owl.
The woman holds a small Bible as a symbol of her personal faith. This denomination features a quote from the Holy Scriptures that guided the settlers who populated this region: "For we walk by faith, not by sight."
