Goldbacks are a concept used by some local governments in the United States that want to introduce gold as an additional form of payment for public services. Goldbacks are monetary units based on the value of gold and silver. Their value is based on the current market value of these precious metals. Unlike paper money, Goldbacks are printed on foil covered with a layer of gold, and their denomination is expressed in grams or fractions of an ounce of gold.

The Nevada state banknote depicts the virtue of Caritas, the personification of mercy. It is modeled after the image, Mary, the mother of Jesus located in St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Austin, Nevada. As in other Goldback designs, there are many elements of symbolism alluding to mercy, such as Mary Magdalene's rose, cherubs crowning Charity, and burning hearts on either side of her.
