The 2026 Malta Maltese Pharaoh Hound is another exceptional issue dedicated to Malta’s heritage and symbolism, produced in collaboration between the Central Bank of Malta and Germania Mint. The coin is the next installment in a series showcasing distinctive motifs associated with the Maltese Islands. Following previous issues dedicated to the bee and the ox, this time the spotlight is on the Pharaoh Hound—a breed strongly associated with Malta and considered one of its most recognizable symbols. The Pharaoh Hound captivates with its slender silhouette, noble appearance, and remarkable agility. Its long legs, distinctive muzzle, and large, erect ears give it an exceptionally elegant appearance, while its strong hunting instinct serves as a reminder of its working nature. The breed has long held a special place in Maltese culture, becoming part of the country’s historical and natural heritage. The dog’s name, meanwhile, refers to ancient Egypt, a connection directly reflected in the coin’s design.

The reverse features the coat of arms of Malta, surrounded by a striking composition of sunbeams. Adjacent to it is the Maltese cross, one of the islands’ most important and recognizable symbols. The combination of these elements gives the obverse of the coin a distinctly national character. The central motif of the obverse is a detailed depiction of the Pharaoh Hound’s head. Its slender muzzle, elongated proportions, and characteristic, high-set ears are rendered with great attention to detail. The background is filled with geometric rays radiating from the image, which reference ancient Egypt and traditional associations with the breed’s name. The composition is complemented by a centrally placed Maltese cross, through which the design combines the symbolism of the Pharaoh Hound with Malta’s cultural heritage.
