The coin series depicts the story of Athos, Porthos, Aramis and D'Artagnan, musketeers of the royal guard.

The novel The Three Musketeers tells the story of a young , 18-year-old Gastonian, D'Artagnian, whose dream is to become a musketeer, for which purpose he sets out for Paris. There he confronts three musketeers; Athos, Porthos and Aramis, eventually they become his inseparable friends. Together they fight faithfully for the then-reigning King Louis XIII against the then-reigning Cardinal Richelieu. The characters of the Musketeers are loosely based on real-life figures.

The reverse of the silver coin depicts the scene when the young D'Artagnan first confronts the three musketeers. Behind the scene is another seated musketeer, watching the spectacle. Beside him, the whole thing is watched by villagers, with urban buildings and a section of Notre-Dame Cathedral visible in the background. The obverse shows a kneeling musketeer in front of a French throne, on which rests the crown of Louis XIII. The foreground shows three pistols and three swords, symbolizing the three musketeers. In the center is placed the coat of arms of the issuer's country, Niue.
