The latest release in the series dedicated to Malta’s heritage is the 2026 Malta Maltese Pharaoh Hound—a unique coin resulting from a collaboration between the Central Bank of Malta and Germania Mint. This is the latest installment in a collection that showcases the rich culture and identity of the Maltese islands through distinctive symbols and motifs. Following previous issues featuring a bee and an ox, it is now time to highlight one of the dog breeds most closely associated with Malta—the Pharaoh Hound. The Pharaoh Hound is distinguished by its elegant, slender build, exceptional agility, and a highly developed hunting instinct. Its distinctive appearance has made this breed one of Malta’s most recognizable symbols and an important part of the Maltese Islands’ heritage. The dog’s very name refers to ancient Egypt, a connection that is also reflected in the coin’s artistic design.

The reverse features the coat of arms of Malta, surrounded by a radiating motif reminiscent of sunlight. The design is complemented by the Maltese cross, one of the country’s most distinctive symbols, underscoring the national character of the issue. The obverse is adorned with a detailed image of the Pharaoh Hound’s head. The artist took care to faithfully reproduce the breed’s distinctive features—a slender muzzle, large, erect ears, and short, smooth fur. In the background, geometrically arranged rays radiate outward, alluding to ancient Egypt and the symbolic heritage associated with the breed’s name. The central element of the composition, however, is the Maltese cross, which harmoniously combines motifs related to the dog itself with Malta’s heritage and identity.
