A medal commemorating some of the best navigators in history - the Vikings.

The Vikings were a nation of mercenary warriors who, from the 8th century AD, were a terror not only on European seas. They organized deep-sea expeditions, mainly for plunder, but also for settlement purposes. They were the first people to reach North America from Europe by sea. They accomplished this long before Columbus.

The reverse of a silver Viking ship, a drakkar. These ships made it possible to travel quickly over quite long distances, for those times. The unfurled sail shows the silhouette of a black raven - Odin's companion. Above the sail is the inscription Berserkers - a term for warriors who drew strength directly from animals. At the very bottom is placed the phrase Odin owns ye All! The obverse depicts the figure of a Viking wielding a distinctive, ornate battle axe.
