African Ounce: Cheetah 2013, 1 oz Silver Coin

The currency is the official means of payment within the state of Rwanda.

Cheetah, the protagonist of the latest installment of the series, is a mammal of the cat family, known primarily for its incredible speed. It is the fastest land animal, capable of reaching speeds of up to 110 km/h over short distances. Characteristic features of the cheetah are its long, slender body, small head, large nostrils and extremely developed leg muscles, which enable it to reach such impressive speeds. Cheetahs are classified as a species at risk of extinction by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The main threats to their survival are habitat loss, poaching and a decline in the number of available prey. Many organizations and nature reserves are working to protect cheetahs, conducting breeding and education programs and working on solutions to reduce human-wildlife conflicts.

The reverse of the bullion coin shows an adult cheetah with its cub. As in previous editions, an area of the African continent is placed next to the predators. The rim reads the name of the series, the date of issue, the silver proof and the weight of the coin. The obverse of the coin is decorated with Rwanda's coat of arms, next to which we can read the denomination of 50 Rwandan francs.
