Chief Sitting Bull was one of the most famous leaders and spiritual leaders of the Sioux tribe. Born around 1831, he distinguished himself as a young man for his courage, charisma and commanding abilities. He gained fame as an excellent strategist and warrior, especially after his victory over General Custer's troops at the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876. Sitting Bull constantly opposed the expansion of white settlers into indigenous peoples' territories and fought to preserve their traditions and independence. After losing the fight for freedom, he stayed in Canadian territory for a while, but eventually returned to the United States, where he was arrested. He died tragically in 1890, shot by Indian policemen during an attempted arrest.

The reverse of the silver medal depicts an intricately rendered figure of the legendary Lakota chief Sitting Bull. He is shown sitting proudly, with a traditional plume on his head, symbolizing his merits and high position in the tribe.
