Myths & Legends: Merlin 2023, 1 oz Silver Coin

The fifth silver cylinder was dedicated to the wizard Merlin.

Merlin is a character from the Arthurian legends, he was a wizard and advisor to King Arthur to help him gain the throne and maintain power. Merlin is described as a mysterious and powerful figure, associated with magic, prophecies. His origins are unclear - in some stories he is the son of a demon, in others he is believed to be the child of a goddess or a man. Merlin had many famous disciples, including, among others, Arthur, who was said to be one of his most faithful and talented protégés. According to legend, Merlin was also responsible for preserving Excalibur's magic sword.

The reverse of the silver cylinder depicts the titular figure of Merlin. He is clad in a wizard's robe, with an owl perched on his right shoulder. In his left hand he holds a magic staff, while his right hand is held raised, as if he were about to cast a spell. Above the figure are his name, the weight of the coin, the silver proof and the date of issue. The obverse depicts the left profile of the currently holding the title of King of the British Isles, Charles III. It also features the denomination, 2 British pounds.
