Rollo of Normandy, also known as Hrólfr or Rolf, was a Viking chieftain originally from Norway or Denmark who lived in the late 9th and early 10th centuries. After numerous raids into what is now France, he made an agreement with King Charles Prostak in 911, known as the Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte. In exchange for lands in northern France - which were later called Normandy - Rollo pledged to defend the region against other Vikings and accepted baptism. His reign began a dynasty of Norman princes that played a huge role in European history. Rollo's descendants, including William the Conqueror, extended his legacy by conquering England in 1066. Rollo is thus recognized as the founder of Normandy and one of the key figures in the history of medieval Europe.
