The first copper coin in the Bödvar Saga series from Germania Mint depicts the story of Bödvar—a mighty and invincible warrior whose life is marked by a tremendous tragedy in an instant. The Bödvar Saga: Loss 1 oz Copper BU 2026 issue refers to the events that mark the beginning of his journey, filled with anger and determination. It is a story of loss, courage, and the quest for justice, depicted through exceptionally detailed and symbolic motifs.

The obverse depicts a pivotal moment in Bödvar’s life. The warrior has been shackled and is forced to watch helplessly as a tragedy unfolds before his eyes. An assailant looms over him, and on the knees of Astrid—his wife—as she dies amid the flames, the final act of the drama unfolds. The destroyed village, the fire, and the figure of the imprisoned warrior create a tense scene in which helplessness mingles with despair. Before she dies, Astrid delivers tragic news to Bödvar—their daughter Sunneva has been kidnapped. This news completely changes his fate. The pain of losing his wife and child turns to rage, which gives him the strength to break free from captivity and begin his search. From that moment on, his goal becomes finding his daughter and bringing those who took his family from him to justice. The reverse side of the coin draws attention to the world of Norse symbolism and depicts Thorbjørn—a sacred mountain whose monumental form resembles a mighty, roaring bear. The rocky colossus symbolizes strength, might, and divine power. On its forehead is the Sowilo rune, while waterfalls cascade from its stone muzzle, giving rise to the rivers flowing at the foot of the mountain. The entire scene is surrounded by a magical runic circle, lending the depiction a mysterious, almost mystical character. Between the teeth of the stone bear is a shield bearing a double-headed eagle, one of Germania Mint’s distinctive symbols. The composition is completed by Bödvar’s chains, which entwine the mountain and form a symbolic link between the warrior’s fate and the mighty, mythical Thorbjørn.
