They were made of high-grade silver (usually 900), which gave them both circulation and bullion value. The obverse of the coins featured images of the rulers of individual German states or state symbols, while the reverse showed the imperial eagle and the denomination. These coins were minted in many mints, including Berlin, Munich, and Hamburg, which is important for collectors today. During World War I, the production of silver coins began to decline, and after 1918, silver was gradually phased out of circulation. Today, silver 1/2 mark coins from this period are valued as historical artifacts and popular numismatic items.
