In the foreground is a horse skull, referring to the oldest chapter of the legend - the ill-fated Peralta expedition of the mid-19th century, when Apache warriors attacked the miners and scattered their wealth across the desert. Decades later, German prospector Jacob Waltz, known as "the Dutchman," rekindled the legend, claiming to know the secret location of the mine and leaving behind riddles that still attract treasure hunters from around the world.
